Posted on September 08, 2009
These photos were taken simultaneously for Worldwide Moment - a global simultaneous photo shoot for peace - when the Moment was September 9 at 9:09am in the +09GMT time zone. (09.09.09+09GMT@09:09)
When the moment occurred the time was 9:09AM in Japan, 5:09AM in India, 3:09AM in Sudan, 1:09AM in England, 8:09PM (September 8th) in Washington D.C., 5:09pm (September 8th) in Vancouver, and so on around the world.
In the first 24 hours since the event we have received photos from more than 1,000 people in 58 different countries who participated. If you took a photo at this moment please upload it so it can be included in our final collection.
It will take some time to prepare the photos for our online gallery. In the meantime, here are 9 select photos we’ve received thus far which were taken simultaneously for Worldwide Moment 2009. Click “more” or here to view.
We intend to publish a book and exhibit the photos in person soon. If you are a gallery owner, producer, or publisher interested in exhibiting this collection please contact us.
If you participated in Worldwide Moment 2009 thank you very very much. We send you so much love. Let this and the final collection of photos be a reminder of what is possible.
Peace,
Brett Brownell

Photo Descriptions:
1) USA - Toledo, Ohio - Photo by Stephanie Miller
“This is a picture of my 4 year old grandson sitting next to a picture of his dad who is stationed in Afghanistan. He’s been there 6 months and has 6 months to go! He just wants him home!”
2) USA - San Francisco - Photo by Mike Schweizer
“The eastern portion of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is being replaced due to concerns that the old structure would not survive a major earthquake. Over Labor Day weekend, the bridge was closed to traffic while a section of roadway was re-routed to accommodate the construction. During the down time, the entire bridge was inspected and a major crack was discovered. It was thought that repairs to this crack would keep the bridge closed today, a normal work/commute day, however crews managed to complete repairs and open the bridge in time to carry the morning traffic. This is a shot taken at 05:09:09:09 PDT from the Treasure Island Marina showing the old structure, the piece of roadway moved aside (on the right), and the sweep of the new bridge approach on the left.”
3) Russia - St. Petersburg - Photo by Michael Bravo
“This picture was taken at Marsovo field (literally: Field of Mars), where there is the Eternal Flame dedicated to the victims of revolutions and civil war of the beginning of 20th century. It was 4:09am local time. You can see a small group of people who were standing talking near the flame, and in the background you can see the vertical section of the opened Troitsky bridge, which spans Neva river when closed during the daytime.”
4) India - Delhi - Photo by Debashish Sengupta
“I got up early in the morning and I headed straight towards India Gate, the heart of Delhi to capture the monument as back drop of my theme, but hard luck there was dark clouds all over and it was completely dark. So finally I ended up with this…But It was great feeling altogether. LONG LIVE WORLDWIDE MOMENT OF PEACE!” Note: Debashish’s sign reads “Peace is not only better than war but infinitely more arduous. -Bernard Shaw / Support Worldwide Moment of Peace Wed - 5:39AM - India - September 9th”
5) Cayman Islands - George Town - Photo by Hanah
“This is how I usually spend my weeknights, after dinner. Online, talking to my parents in California and catching up with friends from the Philippines. The No H8 campaign logo on my laptop is a deliberate expression of gay pride during this worldwide moment.”
6) Pakistan - Lahore - Photo by Rehan
“I live in Pakistan and it was about to morning and sky was still dark. Moon was appeared in the sky I look around but didnt find any thing important as whole city was sleeping at that specific time. My friend invinted me to take picture and I dedicate this shot to him. Thanks Rehan.”
7) USA - Chesapeake, Virgina - Photo by Andy Mellon
“The band Mae www.whatismae.com in the studio putting the finishing touches on the (a)fternoon EP.”
8) USA - Indiana - Photo by Tricia McDowell
“As I tried to think of what would mean the most to me in my thought of peace I came to the conclusion that there would be less need for the loss that war and strife causes. I thank the soldiers who have served, I thank them for my freedom and for the ability to know that someday….I hope…the fighting will end and then there will be no more stones added to our Veteran’s Cemetary because of war.”
9) USA - Texas - Photo by Shaina Sheaff
“With the birth of my daughter, Norahleigh, came an amazing inner peace - unlike anything I have ever experienced.”

I am excited to see what we all have, I didn’t have time to get ready for mine since I was at work but hey I got it done just in time! Something is better than nothing, even if its just landscape!

for many years it has been a question, “what would happen if we all in the world just stopped for one minute and thought of peace in our respective mind set ?” A momentary second may be only a 60th of that time via a photographic shutter, yet what an awesome second.
In a world that needs all the collective support it can muster for each other is worthy of our interest and the world wide moment …. for peace … is absolutely the useful moment…. may humanity receive the Divine Love where all peace must lead, ya think ? !
peace and love my friends |:-)

It was really unfortunate for my case because I became sick and had a high fever. All I can do was grab my phone and take a photo of me in bed.
But it was great to think that at that very moment more than a thousand of people were doing the same thing for the same cause.
I’m glad I was part of it.

Via the Yoko Ono group i was made aware of your wonderful initiative. Today 09-09-09 was also the begin of my first Flickr album, with another photo made for www.millenniumphoto.com to celebrate the millennium switch to New Year 2000.

Mission accomplished! Some people stopped by to ask me what I was taking a photo of at 8:09pm. And from there came the stories… A camera and a story bridges the gap between strangers on a street. Wonderful idea! Peace.
By Worldwide Moment on September 09, 09
Again, thank you so much for your support everyone. We’ll let you know when the gallery is up and running. Stay tuned! Peace!

I wondered what sort of image I would find this morning and where on my route into work it would be. Fortunately I found something worth showing the world. I got stopped by a policewoman who asked me what I was doing. I explained, and she said that she would look it up on the Internet. can’t wait to see all the different photos from across the globe.

You know, when I first heard about this I figured it would be something small, more likely to be participated in by pro photographers in the USA. The actual outcome is unbelievable!!! This was a great experience, and I look very much forward to next years event.

i am struck by all the comments hoping for an end to war and fighting, and remembering that for me when i feel the most PEACE is when i am actually doing something that makes me happy and smile - something that furthers my passion in life - something way deep down inside. Maybe if we all do what we LOVE then there would be no place for hate to be. ~ ijil Rainbow Hawk Giver ~

This was so much fun and we at Peace Planet Project and Peace Planet Foundation are 100% in support of you, Brett! Just a comment…. it would have been 8:09 pm in D.C. (the East Coast), not 7:09 pm. Peace!

I’m so glad to be part of Worldwide Moment 09.09.09. I think one step to global peace would be to cast aside racial, sexual and social discrimination. There is so much space in the world to fill with love, and I don’t get why some people would rather fill it with hate. Xenophobia means ignorance. It’s time for people to open their minds and hearts. Thank you for giving everyone this opportunity to be heard.

Egarly waiting for the pics. I want to see when I clicked WWM pic (India @ 5:39 am) who all were there with me clicking pics for this amazing event. I really want to thank today’s technological advancement that allowed all of us (who participated) to share our moment for world peace. Cheers to all of you for success of this event, especially to Brett.

The first picture is of my son, who I miss dearly. I am in Afghanistan right now, with six months remaining on my deployment. I hope one day peace can be attained so that my brothers and sisters in arms will not be in harms way.
