Guest Blog: Chinako Miyamoto (111 Days Remain)

We all fall into one of these categories: people we know (friends, family, and acquaintances) and people we will never know (strangers).

I often wonder what kind of world we could live in if I could reach a thousand strangers and ask them to consider choosing peace over destruction, freedom over captivity, compassion over antipathy. I can’t say whether the world would be a better place, but I hope that it will, at the very least, start a conversation.

Worldwide Moment is a conversation starter. The project begs a simple question, “Will you join us in a moment of peace?” The instructions are simple: take a photo at 09:09 AM on 09/09/09+09GMT.

I remember after seeing the photos and reading the stories from the last Worldwide Moment, my heart was bursting with joy, knowing that so many people from all corners of the world wished for peace. In that Moment, I felt infinite.

As you pledge to participate in this project, know that you are committing to talk about a more peaceful world. Whether you are taking a photo in Uganda in the dead of night or in Japan when the sun is just starting to reach the highest point in the sky, I cannot wait to see the world through your eyes.

If you’re still reading this, tell your friends to participate. Walk up to a stranger, and ask him or her to join us. Set your alarm.

May the next Moment find you well.

About the Author: Chinako Miyamoto believes in social justice, random acts of kindness, and living simply . It is much easier to be behind the camera than in front of it. Chinako works in higher education at a Catholic women’s college and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. Her photographs can be viewed at flickr.com/chinako

VOTE for PEACE (73 Days Remain)

Part art, part activism: Worldwide Moment is a photography project for peace. Once per year we organize the world community to stop and celebrate peace by taking photographs of their simultaneous worlds. Currently we are honored to be a finalist for a $10,000 online vote-based grant.

I have been organizing Worldwide Moment with very limited resources, yet it’s grown to a group of 3,500 Facebook members, 1,000 Twitter followers, and I’ve seen citizens from more than 20 countries participate. This is not my job. But I treat it like like it is because I believe in the power of this idea.

Will you register and vote for us to win this grant at www.ideablob.com/5550 ?

We have brought this idea so far with so little. Imagine what we could do with $10,000? Build a multi-language website to educate world citizens about Worldwide Moment; provide cameras to international supporters; reach out to schools, churches, non-profits, and influential people around the world.

I’ll be honest, we are the underdog right now in this grant contest. We’re down by about 150 votes at the time of this writing. But I believe in this idea because I believe in the power of art, community, and cooperation.

Your vote for Worldwide Moment is a vote for peace. And please — feel free to re-post this on your own blog and invite others to vote.

Thank you very much,
Let's Get Started! (60 Days Remain)

Welcome to the new WorldwideMoment.org! We are proud to give you this brand new website dedicated to encouraging international participation in our simultaneous photography project for peace. As I’m writing this from a library basement in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A, there are 60 days remaining until Worldwide Moment 2009. So, let’s get started…

In 2002 at the age of 23 I was living in Los Angeles, hoping for an Aha Moment. I was a recent college graduate, very appreciative for the opportunity to attain a higher education, but I felt like a wanderer with no direction or destination. I was “getting by” working as a restaurant delivery driver and a production assistant on T.V. commercials. But something wasn’t right.

So I started volunteering.

The organization was called P.A.T.H. (People Assisting the Homeless). At first I helped in the office, stuffing envelopes and helping answer the phones. It was menial, but at least I felt something.

One night I attended the grand opening for P.A.T.H.’s beautiful new building off the 101 highway. Staff and friends joined current and former homeless residents in a celebration. I helped set up the event by aligning chairs and setting out snacks and drinks. Then I noticed a woman hanging photographs.

Where the walls had been plain, they were suddenly brought to life by these stunning framed images of the residents who lived in P.A.T.H. building.

“Did you take these?,” I asked.

“Some of them. Yes,” she said. “I’m part of a photography group that volunteers our services to P.A.T.H.”

I had found my Aha Moment.

I joined the group, called The Human Essence Photography Group, and photographed special events and holiday gatherings for organizations, schools, and churches around Los Angeles. While photographing these events I noticed the families and communities were at peace together, even if they were struggling individually. Plus, I knew they would always have photographs to reflect on each special occasion. It was the type of gratification I had been seeking.

Then, during one photography group meeting, our president asked each of us to submit an idea for an assignment. I suggested we all take a photograph at the same moment no matter where we were in the city. I wanted to create the sense of community between us as photographers as I had observed between the families and communities we photographed. Plus, I wanted to capture the diverse points of view Los Angeles had to offer at any given moment.

I wasn’t sure if anyone would remember to take a photograph, or if they’d even want to. But the following week the entire group of eight photographers showed up at the meeting, with their photographs in hand from the specified moment. We all shared in the excitement of seeing the city from someone else’s point of view. It was eye-opening and exciting. I wanted to try it again with even more people next time.

And thus, Worldwide Moment was born.

Since then, Worldwide Moment has survived and grown with minimal resources, thanks to a corps group of passionate international citizens. Last year 270 people from 20 countries took part in our simultaneous photography project for peace. We now have thousands of supporters on Facebook and Twitter from all over the world, and this year we aim to have someone from every country involved, which is no easy task.

So what we need as we approach this year’s Worldwide Moment on 09.09.09+09GMT@09:09 is your help. Whether you make a donation to help fund our website and promotional efforts, or simply ask your friends, family, and community to pledge to participate and sign our email list, I hope you’ll be involved this year.

Imagine the people who could participate. Imagine the countries that could be represented. Imagine the photographs. Imagine the impact.

We now have this website to serve as the hub for Worldwide Moment. It is a very exciting day for us, and I expect the next 60 will be even more so.

Thank you for your support, wherever you are in the World.

Peace,
Brett Brownell
Without Them We'd Be Nothing

There are a few people I’d like to mention. Each follower on Twitter, friend on Facebook, participant from last year, email subscriber, and supporter is immensely valuable to us. And I’d like to take a moment to single out a few people who, without them, Worldwide Moment would be nothing more than a pipe dream and still just a thought:

1) Parker is a local friend from Virginia who volunteered to create and maintain our first website for more than a year. We now have a new website design thanks to Dan Spencer and Flyguy Designs, but without Parker WWM 08 would never have happened, and WWM 09 would have no reason to either.

2) Bria Cole (breeshee@gmail.com) is a Toronto-based graphic designer and film producer who volunteered her services to create the Worldwide Moment logo. We went through a few drafts, but from the beginning she was patient and excited, and it wore off on me.

3) Brittany Kerbo is a college student from Tennessee who read an old blog I used to keep and wrote me an email one day to say, “I started a Facebook group for Worldwide Moment. Hope you don’t mind…”. The group now has over 3,400 members. I don’t mind at all ; ) .

Want to write a gust blog entry for us? We’d love to hear from you. Email your thoughts on photography, Worldwide Moment, or an interesting story to worldwidemoment@gmail.com

Yoko Ono and Worldwide Moment

This weekend was an exciting one.

Saturday afternoon I was checking our recent list of pledged photographers when I came across a name I recognized. “Yoko Ono”.

Yoko Ono? John Lennon’s partner in peace? I thought it might be a coincidence. But it wasn’t.

Ms. Ono’s website, Imagine Peace, had featured us on their homepage. Then someone notified us on our Facebook page that she had sent out a Tweet about us from her personal Twitter account. Wow.

So, we are now up to more than 50 countries with representatives for Worldwide Moment with less than 40 days remaining. Thanks for all your hard work helping us spread the word, and thanks to Yoko and Imagine Peace for showing their support for us as well!

Peace,

Worldwide Moment 2009 Photos

These photos were taken simultaneously for Worldwide Moment - a global simultaneous photo shoot for peace - when the Moment was September 9 at 9:09am in the +09GMT time zone. (09.09.09+09GMT@09:09)

When the moment occurred the time was 9:09AM in Japan, 5:09AM in India, 3:09AM in Sudan, 1:09AM in England, 8:09PM (September 8th) in Washington D.C., 5:09pm (September 8th) in Vancouver, and so on around the world.

In the first 24 hours since the event we have received photos from more than 1,000 people in 58 different countries who participated.
Photo Descriptions:

1) USA - Toledo, Ohio - Photo by Stephanie Miller
“This is a picture of my 4 year old grandson sitting next to a picture of his dad who is stationed in Afghanistan. He’s been there 6 months and has 6 months to go! He just wants him home!”

2) USA - San Francisco - Photo by Mike Schweizer
“The eastern portion of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is being replaced due to concerns that the old structure would not survive a major earthquake. Over Labor Day weekend, the bridge was closed to traffic while a section of roadway was re-routed to accommodate the construction. During the down time, the entire bridge was inspected and a major crack was discovered. It was thought that repairs to this crack would keep the bridge closed today, a normal work/commute day, however crews managed to complete repairs and open the bridge in time to carry the morning traffic. This is a shot taken at 05:09:09:09 PDT from the Treasure Island Marina showing the old structure, the piece of roadway moved aside (on the right), and the sweep of the new bridge approach on the left.”

3) Russia - St. Petersburg - Photo by Michael Bravo
“This picture was taken at Marsovo field (literally: Field of Mars), where there is the Eternal Flame dedicated to the victims of revolutions and civil war of the beginning of 20th century. It was 4:09am local time. You can see a small group of people who were standing talking near the flame, and in the background you can see the vertical section of the opened Troitsky bridge, which spans Neva river when closed during the daytime.”

4) India - Delhi - Photo by Debashish Sengupta
“I got up early in the morning and I headed straight towards India Gate, the heart of Delhi to capture the monument as back drop of my theme, but hard luck there was dark clouds all over and it was completely dark. So finally I ended up with this…But It was great feeling altogether. LONG LIVE WORLDWIDE MOMENT OF PEACE!” Note: Debashish’s sign reads “Peace is not only better than war but infinitely more arduous. -Bernard Shaw / Support Worldwide Moment of Peace Wed - 5:39AM - India - September 9th”

5) Cayman Islands - George Town - Photo by Hanah
“This is how I usually spend my weeknights, after dinner. Online, talking to my parents in California and catching up with friends from the Philippines. The No H8 campaign logo on my laptop is a deliberate expression of gay pride during this worldwide moment.”

6) Pakistan - Lahore - Photo by Rehan
“I live in Pakistan and it was about to morning and sky was still dark. Moon was appeared in the sky I look around but didnt find any thing important as whole city was sleeping at that specific time. My friend invinted me to take picture and I dedicate this shot to him. Thanks Rehan.”

7) USA - Chesapeake, Virgina - Photo by Andy Mellon
“The band Mae www.whatismae.com in the studio putting the finishing touches on the (a)fternoon EP.”

8) USA - Indiana - Photo by Tricia McDowell
“As I tried to think of what would mean the most to me in my thought of peace I came to the conclusion that there would be less need for the loss that war and strife causes. I thank the soldiers who have served, I thank them for my freedom and for the ability to know that someday….I hope…the fighting will end and then there will be no more stones added to our Veteran’s Cemetary because of war.”

9) USA - Texas - Photo by Shaina Sheaff
“With the birth of my daughter, Norahleigh, came an amazing inner peace - unlike anything I have ever experienced.”

Photos Coming Soon!

We did it! Over 1,000 people stayed up late, woke up early, and took a Moment out of their day to simultaneously celebrate and document international peace around the world. Thanks to all of you who helped make Worldwide Moment 2009 a huge success!

In the first 48 hours since the event we’ve received nearly 1,200 photos from 60 countries. And photos are continuing to stream in every hour (If you took a photo you can submit it at our homepage).

A few stories we’ve received so far:
* A U.S. soldier participated in Afghanistan, while his four year old son participated in Ohio.
* A mother in Sudan embraced her ten year old daughter, while a new mother in The United States held her one month old daughter.
* A man in Shanghai shared a coffee with 20 million people.
* Students in Australia, Indonesia, Iran, Palestine, Qatar, Taiwan, and The United States took a photo simultaneously.
* A man in India held up a sign that read “Peace is not only better than war, but infinitely more arduous”, while a man in The United States held up a sign that read “No matter how loud I scream no one hears me”.
* Meanwhile, this guy from Malaysia submitted an interesting dance video from his Moment. (Note: the video has audio as well.)
* Believe it or not, we even managed to coordinate a simultaneous satellite photo of Earth taken from an EchoStar satellite, thanks to our new friends at Give The World.

With so many photos and stories it will take us a few more days to prepare the new online gallery. So please be patient as we continue to receive and organize all the photos. We will let you know sometime next week when the new online gallery is available.

Also, we would love to develop a book and in-person exhibition. So, if you are interested in helping us with either of these ideas please contact us. Click “more” to keep reading.

In the meantime, visit this link http://bit.ly/wwm-photos for nine select photos and stories from Worldwide Moment 2009.

If you joined us: THANK YOU! If you missed it: we hope you’ll join us next year!

More soon!

How Can We Make An Impact?

There are a few gauges I believe we should use to judge Worldwide Moment’s success. One is of course the number of people and countries who participate. The other is how effectively we use our platform to make a positive impact on the world.

What do you think?

I believe that although there has been a decrease in economic security recently, there has been an increase in social awareness and selfless desire. I’ve noticed organizations like Invisible Children, To Write Love On Her Arms, and TOMSshoes making a big splash in the world by palpably helping people.

So my hope is that, although Worldwide Moment and the art of photography may not be able to provide a service in the way some organizations do, we will make an impact. Your photograph will inspire people. I promise you. But let’s not stop there. Let’s use our site not only to organize other photographers, but to educate other people about organizations they can get involved with to make an impact on the world. More….

One organization I recently discovered who has a very cool model for allowing you to take action towards a cause you believe in is Everywun.com:

Everywun allows you to make a difference in the lives of people, animals, and the environment in the simplest but most effective of ways. Here’s how it works:

Socially conscious businesses like The North Face and Gaiam sponsor blog and Facebook “badges” you post and earn points for every time they’re clicked. You can then “cash in” your points and the corporate sponsors will provide for the project of your choosing. You can request a meal to be provided through the The United Nations Food Project, a book to be donated through Books for Africa, a tree be planted through Trees for the Future, a mosquito net to help prevent malaria through World Vision, or an animal be fed through The Humane Society.

So I’ve set up the Everywun badge above to show you what they look like and how you can easily click to get involved.

We’d love to hear your suggestions for organizations and people around the world who are making a positive impact. Please comment or write us an email if you have some ideas.

So here are three ways you can help:

1) Become an exhibit sponsor.

If you or your business would like to sponsor the Worldwide Moment exhibit please contact us at:

3) Send us your print.

(Note: if you can’t send a print, that’s ok. We can use the version you uploaded to our site.)

With your help we will be able to exhibit all 1,300 photos for an entire month. Thanks for your support and we hope to see you there!

A few hours from now Worldwide Moment will be teaming up with National Arts Council member Mako Fujimura and his organization the International Arts Movement for a mini-Moment of photography, art, and international community. Join us! All you have to do is take a photo of your world at the moment of Friday March 5 at 2:10pm Eastern time (http://bit.ly/wwm-encounter), then email your photo to worldwidemoment@gmail.com. The photos will be presented tomorrow afternoon in New York City as part of Mr. Fujimura’s annual arts conference called Encounter 10, and will also be posted on our Flickr site.

Our co-producer Jacob Marshall and I were personally invited by Mr. Fujimura to attend Encounter 10 this weekend. We’re meeting artists from around the world, sharing ideas, and gathering support for Worldwide Moment.

This mini-Moment event is first of many in 2010. We will be teaming up with international organizations in order to promote 10.10.10@10:10AM GMT and Worldwide Moment’s goal of creating peace and community through art. If you want to host a mini-Moment please contact us!

We apologize for the short notice, but hope you’ll be able to join us shortly!

What does a new season look like all around the world?

That’s the question we want you to answer by taking a photograph at the exact moment of the Spring/Autumn Equinox on March 20, 2010 at March 20, 2010 at 5:32PM GMT (check http://bit.ly/wwm-equinox for your local time). Then take a photo at that instant and submit it along with your location and a story to worldwidemoment@gmail.com. Then we’ll display the results online.

This “mini-Moment” is one of many simultaneous photo shoots we are inviting you to participate in as we prepare for Worldwide Moment 2010 at 10.10.10@10:10GMT. You can view photo results from our previous mini-Moment and Worldwide Moments on our Flickr page.

We hope you’ll join us, spread the word, and contact us with any questions or ideas.
