How Can We Make An Impact?

Author: admin | Date: September 11, 2009

There are a few gauges I believe we should use to judge Worldwide Moment’s success. One is of course the number of people and countries who participate. The other is how effectively we use our platform to make a positive impact on the world.

What do you think?

I believe that although there has been a decrease in economic security recently, there has been an increase in social awareness and selfless desire. I’ve noticed organizations like Invisible Children, To Write Love On Her Arms, and TOMSshoes making a big splash in the world by palpably helping people.

So my hope is that, although Worldwide Moment and the art of photography may not be able to provide a service in the way some organizations do, we will make an impact. Your photograph will inspire people. I promise you. But let’s not stop there. Let’s use our site not only to organize other photographers, but to educate other people about organizations they can get involved with to make an impact on the world. One organization I recently discovered who has a very cool model for allowing you to take action towards a cause you believe in is Everywun.com:

Everywun allows you to make a difference in the lives of people, animals, and the environment in the simplest but most effective of ways. Here’s how it works:

Socially conscious businesses like The North Face and Gaiam sponsor blog and Facebook “badges” you post and earn points for every time they’re clicked. You can then “cash in” your points and the corporate sponsors will provide for the project of your choosing. You can request a meal to be provided through the The United Nations Food Project, a book to be donated through Books for Africa, a tree be planted through Trees for the Future, a mosquito net to help prevent malaria through World Vision, or an animal be fed through The Humane Society.

So I’ve set up the Everywun badge above to show you what they look like and how you can easily click to get involved.

We’d love to hear your suggestions for organizations and people around the world who are making a positive impact. Please comment or write us an email if you have some ideas.
