How Can We Make An Impact?
Posted on July 12, 2009
There are a few gauges I believe we should use to judge Worldwide Moment’s success. One is of course the number of people and countries who participate. The other is how effectively we use our platform to make a positive impact on the world.
What do you think?
I believe that although there has been a decrease in economic security recently, there has been an increase in social awareness and selfless desire. I’ve noticed organizations like Invisible Children, To Write Love On Her Arms, and TOMSshoes making a big splash in the world by palpably helping people.
So my hope is that, although Worldwide Moment and the art of photography may not be able to provide a service in the way some organizations do, we will make an impact. Your photograph will inspire people. I promise you. But let’s not stop there. Let’s use our site not only to organize other photographers, but to educate other people about organizations they can get involved with to make an impact on the world.
Let's Get Started! (60 Days Remain)
Posted on July 10, 2009
Welcome to the new WorldwideMoment.org! We are proud to give you this brand new website dedicated to encouraging international participation in our simultaneous photography project for peace. As I’m writing this from a library basement in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A, there are 60 days remaining until Worldwide Moment 2009. So, let’s get started…
In 2002 at the age of 23 I was living in Los Angeles, hoping for an Aha Moment. I was a recent college graduate, very appreciative for the opportunity to attain a higher education, but I felt like a wanderer with no direction or destination. I was “getting by” working as a restaurant delivery driver and a production assistant on T.V. commercials. But something wasn’t right.
So I started volunteering.
The organization was called P.A.T.H. (People Assisting the Homeless). At first I helped in the office, stuffing envelopes and helping answer the phones. It was menial, but at least I felt something.
VOTE for PEACE (73 Days Remain)
Posted on June 27, 2009
Part art, part activism: Worldwide Moment is a photography project for peace. Once per year we organize the world community to stop and celebrate peace by taking photographs of their simultaneous worlds. Currently we are honored to be a finalist for a $10,000 online vote-based grant.
I have been organizing Worldwide Moment with very limited resources, yet it’s grown to a group of 3,500 Facebook members, 1,000 Twitter followers, and I’ve seen citizens from more than 20 countries participate. This is not my job. But I treat it like like it is because I believe in the power of this idea.
Will you register and vote for us to win this grant at www.ideablob.com/5550 ?
We have brought this idea so far with so little. Imagine what we could do with $10,000? Build a multi-language website to educate world citizens about Worldwide Moment; provide cameras to international supporters; reach out to schools, churches, non-profits, and influential people around the world.
@lbkerbo Good point and we're working on a solution. (re: pledging to participate if you're already on our email list). Sun, 12 Jul 2009 23:32 via twitter
